Made from American Sea Island Cotton — an ultra-rare variety accounting for only a fraction of the world's cotton harvest. Known for its exceptional staple length and fineness, it offers a supple, refined touch. Once grown exclusively in the West Indies and favored by the British Royal Family since the late 16th century, it was later introduced to the Sea Island region of the United States in the 18th century. Cultivation ceased after 1922 following devastating pest damage, but was successfully revived in 2017 after nearly 100 years. Grown on BCI-certified farms with full traceability to the finished product.
To reproduce the nep texture and raw character of 1880s denim-era spinning yarn, waste cotton from Sea Island Cotton is used in abundance. Slowly woven on vintage power looms, the fabric achieves both a distinctive uneven texture and the supple quality unique to premium cotton. Colorway 001 is a 14oz selvedge finished with a one-wash process — offering the bold character of deep indigo denim, rich fading and honeycombing with wear, and the classic aging of selvedge denim.
Rugged yet refined. The raw strength of original workwear meets the soft character of a rare cotton — a finish that embodies BIG JOHN craftsmanship. Suspender buttons at the waist allow for classic styling. Pairs naturally with a simple tee, chambray shirt, or work jacket. Rolling up the hem to reveal the selvedge is also recommended.
