5728 Indigo Sashiko Shirts
This indigo dobby sashiko shirt is woven using thick yarns to form textured sashiko-style panels. After washing, the different shrink rates between the base fabric and the sashiko areas create a natural puffed texture and depth.
As it ages, the indigo will fade beautifully, offering a uniquely Japanese style of wear and character.
Finished with natural nut buttons, the shirt has a refined and understated look.
SASHIKO DENIM
Sashiko is one of Japan’s proud traditional textiles. Originally developed for warmth and reinforcement in colder regions, sashiko is a sturdy cotton fabric created by layering and hand-stitching thick cotton thread in a repeating pattern. This practical technique was widely used in everyday clothing and household items by ordinary people throughout Japan.
The fine, reinforced stitching not only adds strength to the fabric but also reflects the ingenuity of Japanese craftsmanship. Thanks to its durability, sashiko was used for firemen’s coats during the Edo period, as well as for martial arts uniforms like kendo and judo gear. Over time, it has become one of Japan’s most iconic workwear fabrics.
Its rich texture and thickness, combined with indigo dyeing, offer a unique depth and aging character that’s different from denim. As it’s worn and washed, the fabric gradually develops a deep patina and character that’s all its own.
At Studio D’Artisan, we’ve reimagined this traditional sashiko fabric on a power loom to create our original 14.0oz selvedge sashiko denim. Both warp and weft yarns are dyed using rope-dyed indigo at the deepest concentration, resulting in a rich and intense color. The weaving density is maximized to faithfully replicate sashiko’s distinct bumpy texture and weight.
This makes for an incredibly time-consuming fabric—only half a bolt can be woven per day. By blending this traditional technique with vintage American workwear styling, we’ve created a new design that bridges old-world craftsmanship with modern lifestyles.
