With the original GL3 denim,to bring out the full characteristics of GL3, every detail—from the texture and thickness of the yarn to the number of threads per inch in both warp and weft—is carefully designed according to Studio D’Artisan’s unique recipe. This special denim offers a distinct irregularity and raw texture that cannot be expressed by modern, efficient, uniform mass-produced denim.

For dyeing, the traditional “Amami Mud Dyeing” technique is used, handed down on Amami Ōshima. Each piece is carefully dyed using natural materials: dye from the teechi tree (Sharinbai), which grows on the island, and iron-rich mud derived from geological layers over 1.5 million years old. The resulting color has depth and warmth that cannot be replicated with synthetic dyes.

The silhouette is a regular straight fit based on the 101 model.

Amami Mud Dyed

AMAMI MUD DYED

Amami mud dyeing is a traditional dyeing technique rooted in Amami Ōshima, an island in southern Japan, passed down through generations. While its exact origins are unclear, records from the Nara period over 1,300 years ago mention tea-colored silk fabrics from southern islands like Amami being offered to temples in the capital.

This traditional technique uses dye extracted from the teechi tree (Sharinbai), a plant native to Amami. The teechi tree is a precious plant that takes 10–30 years to mature. Threads and fabrics are repeatedly soaked in the extracted dye and then immersed in iron-rich mud from Amami’s soil, a process repeated multiple times to fix the color. This mud itself is a gift of the land, formed from geological layers more than 1.5 million years old.

Using no chemical dyes and relying solely on natural materials from the island, mud dyeing produces soft, deep, and warm earthy tones. The resulting color carries a delicate yet powerful presence that cannot be replicated with modern synthetic dyes. This technique embodies the spirit of the people of Amami and the wisdom of nature, passed down through countless generations. It is truly a gift from the earth—a unique culture nurtured by time, tradition, and the richness of nature.
