KARASU DENIM
JAPANESE TRADITIONAL COLOR “RAVEN”
In Japan, the expression “Karasu no Nurebairo” (literally “the wet-feather color of a raven”) has long been used to praise beautiful, glossy black hair. It describes a deep, refined black with subtle hints of blue and purple, like the glossy feathers of a raven after rain. This color reflects Japanese aesthetics, combining elegance, sophistication, and quiet strength.
Historically, straight, glossy black hair symbolized the ideal of a “Nihon Bijin” (Japanese beauty), and “Karasu no Nurebairo” was considered the highest compliment for such beauty. In Japanese mythology, ravens were also seen as messengers of the gods, revered as sacred beings carrying divine will. Even today, shrines dedicated to ravens remain across Japan, keeping this spiritual connection alive.
Studio D’Artisan captures the beauty of this traditional color using natural dyes. The warp threads are layered with sumi (black ink) and indigo, creating a deep black-blue tone. The weft threads use slub yarn dyed with shikon (purple root), giving a subtle purplish hue on the surface. Together, the warp and weft create a bluish-black that evokes the depth and richness of a raven’s feathers.
