This is an open-collar shirt made from Studio D’Artisan’s original, playful fabric, which expresses the traditional Japanese dyeing technique kasuri in print. Scenes from the Chōjū-giga scrolls are delicately reinterpreted, and among the lively, unique animals, the pig—a symbol of Studio D’Artisan—is included, creating a design full of playful charm.
The precision of the printed kasuri is so refined that it could be mistaken for real woven ikat, and it is currently produced by the only workshop in Japan that preserves this technique. From yarn preparation to weaving and stencil dyeing, every step is carefully handcrafted by skilled artisans. The buttons are made from natural nut material, making this shirt a piece crafted with attention to every detail.
Chōjū Giga
THE OLDEST MANGA IN JAPAN
Japan’s manga culture has developed in a unique way, unlike anywhere else in the world. One of its origins is considered to be Chōjū Giga, often referred to as the oldest manga in Japan.
The term Chōjū Giga literally means “caricatures of birds and beasts.” It is a set of picture scrolls depicting animals such as rabbits and frogs, drawn vividly and humorously. Even without the use of any written words, the visual storytelling is so skillful that anyone can understand the unfolding narrative. Believed to have been created around 1,200 years ago, it is a valuable work that can be called the starting point of visual storytelling.
Studio D’Artisan took inspiration from this Chōjū Giga and created an original fabric using the traditional weaving and dyeing technique of print kasuri. This fabric embodies both Japan’s narrative traditions and the rich craftsmanship of its artisans.
PRINT KASURI
JAPANESE TRADITIONAL DYEING
Print Kasuri is a unique Japanese dyeing technique that originated about 100 years ago in Niigata Prefecture. This method uses special dyes that develop color through oxidation. By applying a paste containing oxidizing and neutralizing agents to the fabric with stencil paper, it allows for the expression of intricate patterns.
Since it does not require heat to dye, the process is gentle on both the environment and the fabric itself. The finished textile boasts a precision and beauty so refined that it is nearly indistinguishable from woven kasuri. From yarn preparation to weaving and stencil dyeing, every step of the process is carried out by the skilled hands of master artisans.
Today, however, only a single workshop in Japan continues to preserve and practice this technique. Print Kasuri is a special textile that embodies the harmony of Japanese traditional beauty and craftsmanship, radiating a quiet, profound charm. Please take the opportunity to experience for yourself the timeless beauty of this rare fabric.
