This is a 1st type denim jacket dyed with Kyoto Aqua Indigo.

The base fabric is Studio D'Artisan’s standard 100 series denim. Ecru stitching thread is used, creating a color scheme where a subtle asagi tone appears after dyeing. The base indigo gains deeper richness, while the reverse side is dyed in a vivid asagi color. The pale and delicate tone, dyed evenly without irregularity, is achieved through the careful handwork and sensitivity of female artisans. Please fully enjoy this clear, refined indigo color that resembles pure water.

KYOTO AQUA INDIGO

IN SEARCH OF THE PHANTOM INDIGO

Indigo has been used as a dye in various parts of the world since ancient times.

In Japan, it has a history of over 1,200 years, and in Kyoto in particular, high-quality indigo known as “Kyo no Mizuai” was once widely cultivated.

This indigo, grown with Kyoto’s pure water, was known for producing especially vivid and elegant colors, and its beauty was called “Kyo Asagi,” recognized as one of the finest indigo dyes in Japan.

However, with the passage of time, imported products and synthetic indigo became widespread, and production gradually declined.

Eventually, about 100 years ago, it was believed that Kyoto’s water-grown indigo had disappeared.

However, in recent years, it was discovered that the supposedly lost seeds had been preserved and passed down by indigo artisans in Tokushima.

The seeds have now returned to Kyoto, and indigo dyeing produced in Kyoto has finally been revived.

Today, most indigo cultivated in Japan is a variety called “Akabana Kojoko,” but Kyoto’s water-grown indigo is a rare variety called “Shirobana Kojoko,” which produces white flowers.

Furthermore, this “Kyoto Aqua Indigo” is carefully cultivated through fully organic farming without the use of pesticides, from cultivation to dye production.

Its cultivation method is also unique, as it is grown using water-based farming similar to rice cultivation, which is why it came to be known as “Mizuai” (water-grown indigo).

Indigo grown in paddy fields produces a light and highly delicate color, making it a difficult material to handle, as even slight differences in the process can result in uneven dyeing.

Facing this delicacy, each piece is carefully dyed while preserving tradition, supported by the sensitivity and craftsmanship unique to female artisans.

Once considered a phantom, “Kyoto Aqua Indigo.”

Please fully enjoy this clear, refined indigo color that resembles pure water.
