Taking the context of World War II into account, we have meticulously recreated the rough and utilitarian stitching and simplified details typical of the era. We intentionally incorporate uneven stitchwork and subtle “distortions” in the specifications, applying denim with a muted, oxidized indigo blue and the rough texture characteristic of the period to our standard 100-series selvedge denim. The tack buttons are made of iron laurel buttons, which develop natural rust over time. The silhouette is a regular straight fit based on the 101 model.

No.100 WWII DENIM

In the early 1940s, during World War II, the United States needed to concentrate national resources on the war effort. As part of this, the Wartime Production Board introduced strict regulations on the production of civilian goods, including clothing. In particular, cotton and metal components used in garments—such as rivets and buttons—were prioritized for military use, greatly affecting workwear, including jeans.

Under the Board’s guidance, details considered “luxuries” were thoroughly eliminated. Changes included simplified rivets, the removal of rivets from watch pockets, and the use of printed arcuate stitching (e.g., painted instead of sewn). These modifications drastically simplified jeans, resulting in a practical, rugged wartime design.

Additionally, many experienced tailors were mobilized for military production, and sewing operations for jeans were often staffed with less experienced workers. As a result, stitching could be rough and uneven, and misalignments were common. Because even re-sewing was restricted, these imperfections were shipped as-is.

At Studio D’Artisan, they have carefully recreated the rough and utilitarian stitching and simplified details of that wartime period. They intentionally reproduce uneven stitchwork and subtle “distortions” in the specifications, combining them with denim that features a muted, oxidized indigo blue and the rough texture characteristic of the era, all applied to our standard 100-series selvedge denim.
