TCB 10oz Black Cat Engineer Jacket
Inspired by workwear from the 1920s and 1930s, this engineer jacket features the asymmetrical chest pockets often found on vintage coveralls. Originally designed around practical needs such as carrying a watch or tools, these mismatched pocket shapes have become one of the most distinctive details of early American workwear.
A particular source of inspiration for TCB is the distinctive chest pocket found on vintage Black Bear workwear. TCB has previously recreated this detail on its coveralls and later collaborated with Seattle-based Black Bear Brand, creating a collection featuring a label with TCB's cat sitting above the bear. For this Engineer Jacket, TCB returned to an original vintage Black Bear garment as the design reference.
Design / Construction
The jacket has a collarless design and a shorter body than a traditional coverall, giving it a simple, functional appearance. The asymmetrical chest pocket becomes even more prominent without a collar, while raglan sleeves reproduce the construction of the original vintage reference.
The raglan construction also creates seams that run at different angles across the grain of the denim. With repeated washing and wear, these seams are expected to develop distinctive puckering and texture. The collarless neckline also makes the jacket easy to layer over a hooded sweatshirt.
Fabric
TCB developed an original denim specifically for this jacket under the code name "TCB-003." The fabric is based on a deadstock vintage 2×1 denim that had never been washed, allowing TCB to study the original yarn thickness, weave density, and color directly rather than estimating them from a worn and shrunken vintage garment.
The resulting 10oz denim uses #10 warp yarn and #12 weft yarn made from Zimbabwe cotton. The weaving density was designed from measurements taken directly from the original deadstock fabric, while the exact thread count remains undisclosed by TCB.
