These are shorts made from Studio D’Artisan’s original Indigo Noragi Sashiko Dobby fabric. The knee-length, clean silhouette combines a classic look with a contemporary feel. By weaving together two types of indigo slub yarn, the fabric reproduces the soft, faded texture of garments that have been worn for many years. Irregular sashiko stitching running vertically and horizontally creates the warmth and rustic expression reminiscent of hand sewing. The buttons are made from natural nut material, providing a simple yet refined accent. Enjoy the deepening character of the indigo as it naturally ages with wear.

INDIGO NORAGI SASHIKO

In the era when kimonos were worn as everyday clothing, cotton garments were an essential and valuable part of daily life. They were necessary for comfort and protection, and people treated them with great care. Even when garments became worn or torn, they were not discarded immediately; instead, they were patched or resewn with sashiko stitching to be worn as long as possible.

Clothing that had been carefully repaired in this way was called noragi, and it embodied not only practicality but also a distinct sense of aesthetics. The texture of each hand-stitched seam and the improvised combination of different fabrics created warmth and a unique beauty.

Studio D’Artisan reinterpreted this traditional spirit with a modern sensibility, reviving it as an original fabric: Indigo Noragi Sashiko Dobby. Woven with two types of indigo slub yarn, this fabric expresses a soft, faded depth as if it had been passed down through generations. The sashiko stitching varies in direction and style, adding the warmth and natural expression unique to handwork.

Additionally, the fabric is finished with high-temperature tumbling to introduce shrinkage, designed to develop a rich three-dimensional texture over time. This fabric pays homage to Japan’s traditional workwear culture with contemporary sensibility and technique, fusing inherited aesthetics with the meticulous craftsmanship of Japanese artisans, giving birth to a completely new Indigo Noragi Sashiko.
