GL3 DENIM
The GL3, built by Toyota Automatic Loom about half a century ago, was Japan’s first power loom and has no replacement parts available. As a result, the only way to maintain it is to salvage parts from decommissioned looms to replace broken components in those still in operation. It is a labor-intensive and extremely challenging machine to maintain, capable of weaving only five meters per hour—an inefficient process by modern standards.
However, denim woven on the GL3 possesses the ruggedness and raw character of denim from fifty years ago, making it a truly unique loom capable of expressing denim as authentic workwear.
To maximize the distinctive characteristics of the GL3, every aspect of the denim—from the texture and thickness of the yarn, the shades achieved through rope dyeing, to the warp and weft density—is crafted according to Studio D’Artisan’s original recipe. It features a unique unevenness and roughness that cannot be reproduced by modern, efficient, and uniform denim production. This denim is the result of uncompromising dedication and repeated test weaving, culminating in a work of which we are immensely proud.
